Katie Durante, Ph.D.

Katie Durante, Ph.D. has been an Assistant Professor at NSC since August 2017.

Dr. Durante is an active researcher whose scholarship primarily focuses on racial and ethnic disparities in sentencing and the impacts of incarceration on the family. She takes a critical lens, centering racial injustice in her research. She has published in numerous outlets ranging from traditional peer-reviewed journals to local public news agencies. Dr. Durante values the opportunity to work with local organizations and share her expertise with the community, in the hopes of working toward a more just society.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminology from John Carroll University, a master’s degree in Sociology from Cleveland State University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati. Before her employment at NSC, she was a program-evaluation researcher on grants funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Bureau of Justice Administration (BJA) for the Hamilton County, Ohio drug court in collaboration with Talbert House.

She teaches the following courses at NSC: Social Justice; Social Inequality & Crime; Quantitative Applications in Criminal Justice (statistics); Introduction to the Administration of Justice; Seminar in Criminal Justice (senior capstone: emphasis on data analysis & formal writing).

She has also taught Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Drugs & Society, and Criminology.
