OUR HISTORY
1998
Around a kitchen table, Henderson leaders envision a four-year state college to train teachers.
1999
We’re approved and established by the Nevada Board of Regents!
2000
The University of Nevada, Reno is named our sponsoring institution.
2001
A former vitamin company is repurposed as our first campus building with state funding.
2002
Our doors are opened in the fall to 177 students learning in three classrooms and a library.
2003
We grew 222% to 569 enrolled students in just one year!
2004
Our first graduating class of 13 students celebrated commencement in May.
2005
Dr. Fred Maryanski, president, spearheaded a master plan for the college.
2006
Four years later, we’re just shy of 2,000 students!
2007
Groundbreaking on the new Liberal Arts & Sciences Building ushers in a new era.
2008
We’re here to stay! The LAS building opens as we celebrated our fifth anniversary.
2010
At nearly 3,000 students, we’re growing fastest in the Nevada System of Higher Education.
2011
We’re accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
2012
Bart Patterson is named president. SCOTTY the Scorpion becomes mascot to 3,200 students.
2013
Two new buildings were approved for nursing, education, student activities, and leadership.
2014
Our first post-baccalaureate certificate program partners students with the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
2015
Dr. Amber Howerton, with UNLV faculty, earns a five-year, $3.25 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. U.S. Board on Geographic Names approves Mount Scorpion on April 30.
2016
We broke commencement records with 403 graduates, and surpassed 3,000 alumni!
2017
Named second-fastest growing public baccalaureate college in the nation from 2005-15, we also earned a $2.7 million federal Hispanic-Serving Institution grant.
2018
At more than 4,200 students, our momentum continues as we complete our 15th academic year.
2019
We broke ground on our first on-campus residential housing units.
2020
We broke ground on the Glenn and Ande Christenson School of Education Building, which will welcome students fall 2021.
2021
Bart Patterson retires as president on June 30th while Dr. DeRionne Pollard assumes the presidency on August 16th.
