As a professor of education, I have worked in higher education for over 20 years, in both faculty and administrative positions. My teaching and research interests and experiences have been focused in areas related to special education teacher preparation, educator cultural competence, addressing teacher pipeline issues, and supporting first generation college students. I regularly present papers at local, regional, national, and international education conferences and participate on boards of several professional organizations. I regularly embed problem-based learning, action research, and volunteerism in my courses so students can engage in collaborative problem-solving, experience what they are learning in classes, and contribute to positive change in the community. I coach basketball for Special Olympics Nevada. I sit on the state board of the English Mastery Council. I am a founding board member of the Nevada Accessible Trails Foundation and I am active in Latinx education and health initiatives in the community and K-16.
