Head shot Assistant Director of the Writing Center Rachel Herzl-Betz

Rachel Herzl-Betz, Ph.D.

I am the Writing Center Director and an Assistant Professor of English. I earned my BA from Carleton College, where I first discovered the Writing Center community. While earning my PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I started exploring intersections between Writing Centers, Writing Studies, and Disability Justice. My publications include work in The Writing Center Journal, Pedagogy, and the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies. Most of my time is spent in the Writing Center, but I also teach Humanities courses such as “Writing and Access,” “Introduction to Writing Studies,” and “Introduction to Young Adult Literature.”

I chose this work 1) because I love helping students share writing-focused research and 2) because I love hanging out with language nerds. Since joining the NSC community, I’ve founded the English Department’s Writing Pedagogy Reading Group, the Writing Center Speaker Series, and the Faculty/Staff Writing Group. When I’m not on campus, I enjoy visiting coffee shops, playing with my daughters, and rewatching tv shows I can quote from memory.
