Samantha Jewell, Ph.D.

I joined NSC in 2015 and shortly thereafter applied for an National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM grant to create the Mentoring to Accelerate Retention and Change Outcomes in Science (MARCOS) Scholar Program. This ~$650,000 grant was awarded to NSC and will fund scholarships for students who like myself, are low income students interested in Biology. I get to be the difference at NSC in a way I never dreamed. MARCOS Scholars will be provided research and professional development opportunities that help foster and retain excitement for science. As freshmen students will be eligible for up to $5,550 of additional support beyond financial aid and other scholarships.

In addition to running the MARCOS Scholar program, I follow in the footsteps of Dr.’s Calie and Bautista by providing research experiences for undergraduate students. Currently in my lab, we examine how phagocytic cells respond to infectious agents. As a research student in my lab, you will learn how to maintain mammalian cell culture, as well as, perform flow cytometry, Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assays, intracellular and surface antibody staining, and functional assays needed to obtain a research position or be at the top of your game in graduate school.

If you are interested in applying to the MARCOS Scholar Program, please apply at: https://nsc.flywheelstaging.com/admissions/scholarships/ or if you have any questions email: marcos.scholars@nsc.flywheelstaging.com

Dr. Jewell regularly teaches: Biol 209 (Cell Processes), Biol 251 (General Microbiology), Biol 351 (Microbiology), Biol 453 (Immunology)
