MISSION

Sankofa is designed to support the retention and recruitment of Black students at NSC. Rooted in social justice and community advocacy, students have the opportunity to engage in mentorship, receive academic support, and participate in social activities offered by Black faculty and staff, community leaders and the rest of the NSC family. GOALS

Sankofa is designed to support the retention and recruitment of Black students at NSC through the following activities:

  • Mentorship by Black faculty and staff, local community members, and the general NSC community
  • Internal community events and external internship opportunities
  • Regular events to create community and foster retention
  • Working in partnership with local Black organizations such as the Collegiate 100, NAACP, Local fraternities and sororities to highlight leadership skills and academic success tips for Black Students
  • Annual Summer Bridge Program: Sankofa offers an annual summer bridge designed to recruit Black high school juniors, seniors, and community college students into NSC. The Summer Bridge includes college access and academic success strategies, socio-emotional supports, and financial literacy. Students also have a chance to explore Black Las Vegas history.
  • Informal advising: Students have an opportunity to meet with a Black faculty or staff once a month for informal advising
  • Financial literacy: Students are provided tips for scholarships and financial aid
  • Graduate School/Research preparation: We support Black students  in locating and identifying graduate school applications and research projects
